Experience Ronda – A local concert at the bullring
Set in the heart of the Serrania of Ronda, about 100 km from the city of Malaga you’ll find Ronda, a spectacular village perched above a deep gorge and surrounded by lush valleys. If you’ve been, you’ll understand why it’s one of the most visited towns in the whole of Spain. If you’ve not been, we recommend you put it at or near the top of your wishlist.
There are plenty of incredible landmarks in Ronda, but the most famous is the Puente Nuevo or ‘new’ bridge, which has spanned the River Tajo since 1793. It took 34 years to build and includes a tiny chamber above the middle arch that used to be used as a prison and torture chamber!
Ronda is also known as the cradle of bullfighting and its 5,000 capacity Real Maestranza is one of the most picturesque bullrings in the country, built coincidently by the same architect as the bridge. The arena isn’t only used for bullfighting though.
We visited recently and watched a delightful concert performed by local schoolchildren. The combination of live music in a historical setting made for an extremely memorable evening and we would highly recommend you make time to take in a concert or cultural event if you’re in the vicinity.

For overnight visits, the Parador hotel located next to the bridge offers unrivalled views of the surrounding scenery and, if we had to suggest the best time to go, choose Spring when the valley floor is carpeted with colourful blooms.
