Tablao or no tablao?
Everybody knows about flamenco, especially in Andalucia, but although you might know about it, very few people understand what it’s really about. You may have seen flamboyant, large-scale shows while on holiday, but flamenco in Spain is much more about intimacy and storytelling, and best experienced in small atmospheric bars.
However, if you are keen on watching a full and professional dancing performance – and there are some very good ones – I recommend you go to a tablao and enjoy an espectáculo flamenco.
A tablao (colloquial term for the Spanish ‘tablado’, floorboard) is the venue where flamenco shows are performed. They started to become very popular in Spain in the 1960s and were the natural substitute of the traditional ‘cafés cantantes’ or cabarets.
Some flamenco fans would never consider going to a tablao and claim that these kind of espectáculo flamenco are just a tourist trap. While some tablaos are part of the touristic circuit and can be packed, there are others that offer incredible shows and still honour the true flamenco traditions.
