In La Rioja is the charming city of Logroño, a place that in recent years has built up quite a reputation for its food. Although you’ll find various Michelin star restaurants here, in Logroño you don’t have to break the bank to eat well as the quality of food is remarkable even down at street level, and those in the know can get some incredible cuisine here for just a fraction of the price.
On Calle Laurel in the heart of the old town you can find an abundance of small culinary delights called ‘pintxos’, a variation of the more widely known tapas but usually served on a skewer. Along this street there are an incredible 73 bars, each one serving a different pintxo.
There are pintxos of all types, some sophisticated and modern, others more traditional like the ‘cojonudo’, a trio of local Riojan ingredients – fried egg, chorizo and alegría (a spicy chilli pepper). Naturally you’ll need an accompanying glass or two of Rioja to complete the true Logroño experience.
