DAYS 1 & 2

Madrid

Check-in at your hotel then spend the afternoon exploring the galleries, museums and attractions of Spain’s vibrant capital. Whatever your interests, we can advise you of the best things to do during your time in Madrid. From the Baroque to the brash, and from the cultural to the culinary, our tours in Madrid have been carefully created to highlight the many different faces of this unique city.

In the evening, take a table at one of our personal favourite restaurants, hand-picked according to your tastes.

DAY 3

Segovia

After a leisurely breakfast, head northwest to Segovia, a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring medieval walls and architecture. Star of the show is the two thousand-year-old Roman aqueduct towering above the modern city, but you’ll find plenty of other breath-taking attractions worthy of exploration, including the fairy-tale Alcázar, said to the be the inspiration for the castle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, plus the magnificent cathedral overlooking the Plaza Mayor.

DAY 4

Ribera de Duero

Next stop, Ribero del Duero, home to one of Spain’s favourite wines. Here, we’ve arranged a visit to a winery, including lunch in a cave restaurant. You’ll also have time to visit the city of Peñafiel, famous for what some consider the most astounding castle in Spain, and the Plaza del Coso, a quaint medieval square framed with traditional wooden balconies.

DAY 5

Burgos

Drive further north to the ancient city of Burgos, a living museum of extraordinary architecture including the 13th century cathedral and the Cartuja de Miraflores Abbey, and named gastronomic capital of Spain in 2013. Have lunch at any of our recommended restaurants and you’ll taste why!

From Burgos, drive to Haro for one-night stay and a traditional evening meal at a beautiful family-owned hotel housed in a former convent at the heart of La Rioja wine country.

DAY 6

La Rioja

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel then take a stroll along the narrow streets of Haro to a winery where you can sample the labels and learn about the history of wine production in this area.

Late morning, collect your car and travel on to Laguardia, a fascinating medieval town overlooking the River Ebro. Lunch has been arranged at a beautiful castle, followed by a tour of an underground winery that dates back over 400 years.

DAY 7 & 8

Bilbao

The penultimate day of your self-drive tour is spent in lovely Bilbao. It goes without saying that one of the highlights of the city is that marvel of contemporary architecture, the Guggenheim Museum. Depending on your interests, we can recommend other great things to see and do in and around the city.

On the 8th and final day, we’ll provide transport to the airport for your flight home. Alternatively, if you’d like to extend your stay in Spain, we’re happy to make arrangement for extra nights at your Bilbao hotel and/or beyond.

Get in touch

We don’t deal in one-size-fits-all holidays. We build amazing journeys tailored just for you. But before we can do that, we need to know about you – what excites you, what are your ‘must-sees’ and ‘must do’s’, and conversely, what do you want to avoid or what makes you feel indifferent. We don’t do indifferent, and neither should you!
