A day in the vineyard with the family
Wine and its associated culture is more often than not considered an adults-only activity. But it doesn’t necessarily need to be so.
Whilst traveling through La Rioja my children and I decided to visit a small family-run vineyard just outside Logroño, the capital of La Rioja region of Spain. It was a pleasant surprise to attend a wine tour workshop where the children could be actively involved in the ancient tradition of viticulture – the cultivation of grapevines and the production of wine.
Under the guidance of a professional, all members of my family were able to carry out different activities in the vineyards and winery, as well as obtaining in-depth knowledge of all the work associated to producing a good Riojan wine. We learned how to prune the vines, took part in grape stomping and pressing, helped with experiments to help understand wine fermentation, as well as finally bottling and labelling the wine. And obviously to finish the tour, we all took time to sample the local produce, though before you start wondering what kind of parent lets their young children drink wine, let me quickly add that it was only grape juice for the children!
